Jeff SmootIn a world of increasing legal specialization, Jeff Smoot is one of the last of the generalists: a bankruptcy lawyer. Bankruptcy practice involves a variety of legal issues and practice areas, including consumer and commercial litigation, business transactions and restructuring, real estate, secured transactions, finance, foreclosure, domestic relations, community property, labor and employment, tax, fraud, and dispute resolution, sometimes all in one case. At its essence, bankruptcy practice deals with protection and transition of assets. Jeff’s practice focuses on legal matters involving preservation and restructuring of individual, business, marital, and estate assets, including bankruptcy and receivership, business formation and restructuring, estate planning, probate, and judgment enforcement. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jeff worked as a litigation, bankruptcy, and family law paralegal for 18 years, managing collection and bankruptcy caseloads and assisting in complex insolvency and divorce cases and state and federal court appeals.

Jeff is a regular speaker at legal seminars on bankruptcy, collection, and legal ethics, and was recognized as a Rising Star by Washington Law & Politics in 2010, 2016 and 2017. He is a past Chair of the Washington State Bar Association Law Clerk Board, and serves on the Camp Long Advisory Council, a volunteer board dedicated to providing and funding outdoor education and environmental learning opportunities for underserved youth. Jeff is also a noted outdoor adventure writer and photographer, and has authored several guidebooks on hiking and climbing in the Pacific Northwest.
